Spring cleaning: tips for preparing your home

Thinking about a Cleaning deep clean at home? A change of season is a good time to review less frequently cleaned areas, ventilate and organise tasks. Adapt the plan to materials and available time.

1. Ventilation. Renew the air in a way appropriate to your home. Do not replace ventilation with ozone treatments , which require specialist assessment and must not be applied around people or animals.
2. Plan cleaning by area, working from top to bottom and starting with less frequent tasks. Remove dust from high areas using safe access.
3. Clean walls according to their finish. Check whether the paint is washable and test discreetly. Do not wet sensitive finishes or attempt to conceal damp problems through cleaning.
4. Vacuum floors. Use compatible equipment and attachments to remove particles without dispersing them. To reduce allergen build-up , combine cleaning with appropriate ventilation and source control, without assuming complete elimination.
5. Want to reduce environmental impact? Follow dosage instructions, avoid wasting water and choose products with verifiable environmental information. A natural ingredient is not automatically a disinfectant or suitable for everything.
6. Remember ceilings Remove dust using a compatible method and safe access. Isolate electrical equipment before work and keep light fittings and components dry. Leave difficult tasks to competent personnel.
7. Clean switch exteriors, with the circuit safely isolated and following manufacturer instructions. Do not introduce liquids, remove parts or clean contacts; consult an electrician for internal work.
8. Care for wooden floors. Remove dust using a non-scratching attachment and apply only the recommended cleaner. Do not use abrasive pads, sandpaper or shoe polish to disguise marks; restoration requires a specific treatment.
9. Steel, taps and kitchen surfaces. Use products compatible with each material and follow their labels. Do not combine acids, bleach or other cleaners. Keep bathroom and kitchen cleaning equipment separate.
10. Cupboards. Empty them section by section, remove dust and clean with minimal moisture where the finish allows. Dry before replacing items and review what to keep or donate.
