Pool maintenance and cleaning: what to consider

Enjoying a permanent or above-ground pool requires proper care of both the water and installation. This guide covers the basics; the specific plan must suit the model, use and applicable requirements.

Above-ground pools come in different sizes and require a suitable base, correct assembly and maintenance. Before installation, particularly on terraces, have a professional check structural capacity. Do not leave them accessible to children without supervision.

Before assembly, clean the pool as recommended and inspect the liner, joints and structure. Install it in a suitable location following the manual. Do not fill it until the assembly and base have been checked.

Water quality depends on filtration, cleaning and controlled treatment. Choose a compatible system and follow testing, dosing and waiting instructions. Never mix treatment chemicals.

• Chlorine: use only authorised pool products compatible with the installation. Different formulations cannot simply be interchanged without adjusting the procedure. Avoid concentrated contact with the liner and follow the label.

• Salt chlorination: adding salt alone does not disinfect a pool. A compatible electrolytic system generates disinfectant from chlorides. It still needs testing, maintenance and precautions; it does not mean chlorine-free water or eliminate irritation.

• Other treatments: active oxygen or other systems should only be used when authorised for the intended purpose. Discuss limitations and compatibility with a professional; do not assume they are harmless or sufficient on their own.

Routine pool maintenance

Remove leaves and debris with a suitable net. A compatible cover can reduce dirt entering the pool, but an ordinary cover does not replace a safety barrier or supervision of children.

Maintain the filtration system as instructed by the manufacturer. Operating times and filter cleaning depend on water volume, use and equipment type; not every pool uses a sand filter.

Test water parameters with suitable equipment at a frequency appropriate to use and applicable requirements. Keep pH and disinfectant levels within the relevant limits. Follow product instructions when adjusting them and keep swimmers out until conditions are suitable.

Periodic tasks

Alongside routine checks, schedule surface and equipment care according to the maintenance plan.

• Clean walls and the floor using tools compatible with the pool lining.

• Inspect and clean the filter following the manufacturer’s procedure, without working on equipment while running or pressurised.

• Adjust treatment according to actual water measurements. A weekly application does not guarantee suitable disinfection throughout the week.
