How to remove oil stains
Published on 31/07/2018
Oil stains are common in kitchens and can affect clothes, upholstery and other surfaces. Treatment depends on the material, its finish and how long the stain has been there.
Water alone does not dissolve oil. Remove the excess and use a compatible cleaning product, testing it first on an inconspicuous area. Always check the care label.
Absorbing oil from fabrics
On suitable fabrics, a compatible absorbent can help lift fresh oil before washing. Take delicate or dry-clean-only items to a professional.
Act promptly and blot the excess with clean paper without rubbing or spreading the stain. If the fabric permits a powdered absorbent, apply and remove it as directed. Follow with a compatible stain treatment and wash according to the care label. Avoid soaking upholstery or carpet backing.
Suitable detergent for greasy stains
A detergent compatible with the fabric can help loosen grease. There is no need to mix it with vinegar or other products; check the instructions before applying it.
Apply a small amount of suitable stain treatment and follow the recommended time. Wash at a temperature permitted by the label and check the stain before heat drying. If it remains, seek professional advice rather than repeatedly using harsh treatments.
Powdered absorbents
Some absorbents can help with very fresh stains where the material allows them. Avoid creating or inhaling dust, remove residues carefully and only use products suitable for the surface. Older stains may need professional treatment.
On wood
Remove excess oil first. On wood with a washable finish, use a barely damp cloth with the recommended cleaner and dry promptly. Do not soak the surface.
Natural or porous wood may absorb oil and darken. Do not apply white spirit or ammonia unless specifically advised by the manufacturer or a restorer, as they can damage the finish. Seek advice if the oil has penetrated.
Oil stains on washable walls
Check that the paint is washable and test in an inconspicuous area. Gently remove grease with a compatible cleaner and dry without scrubbing. Do not add bleach or ammonia. Porous painted surfaces may need professional treatment.
Oil stains on leather
Blot the excess without rubbing and check the leather care instructions. Do not apply ether, household oils or unsuitable creams, as they can stain or damage the finish. Use only a compatible leather product or consult a specialist.
