Hotel room cleaning: step by step
Published on 21/08/2018
Room cleaning affects the guest experience and accommodation reviews. It needs a clear procedure, suitable products and trained staff. Below are common tasks, which should be adapted to each hotel’s protocol.

Basic hotel room cleaning
The aim is to hand over a clean, tidy room ready for the next guest, following the establishment’s procedure.
-
Remove used sheets and pillowcases according to the dirty-linen procedure. Check the mattress, protectors, blankets and duvets for stains or issues.
-
Make the bed with clean linen and arrange the cover or duvet neatly. Position cushions and other items according to hotel standards.
-
Empty bins with suitable gloves and procedures. Replace liners as required and avoid directly handling unknown waste.
-
Dust furniture and frames with a clean cloth suited to each material, without excess moisture.
-
Clean touchpoints such as the remote and telephone according to equipment instructions. If the protocol requires disinfection, use a compatible product for the specified contact time. Check the refrigerator where present.
-
Deep window-cleaning frequency depends on the hotel plan. During routine checks, remove accessible marks covered by the scope.
-
Replenish agreed items such as soap, toilet paper and towels according to hotel standards.
-
Check drawers and cupboards for forgotten items and follow the lost-property procedure.
-
Leave the wardrobe tidy, with hangers and additional items in place. Check spare blankets and pillows.
-
Vacuum the floor, including accessible areas under beds, taking care around furniture and cables.
Cleaning the room’s bathroom
-
Remove used towels and consumed containers or products, and empty the bin according to procedure.
-
Check toilet paper and replenish according to the establishment’s standard, including agreed spare rolls.
-
Clean the mirror with a compatible product and suitable cloth to avoid marks.
-
Clean the basin, bathtub and shower surfaces with appropriate tools and products. Rinse where the label requires and dry the relevant areas.
-
Clean the toilet inside and out with dedicated tools. Toilet cloths and tools must not be used on other surfaces.
-
Remove splashes from compatible wall surfaces where needed.
-
Replenish bathroom products defined by the hotel, such as soap, shampoo or other items.
-
Clean the floor last using a suitable method and leave it safe before handing over the room.
These points explain the work, but each hotel should define its procedure and scope. For a professional cleaning assessment, describe areas and duties; room cleaning must be expressly confirmed in the proposal.
