Cleaning your oven at home, step by step

The oven is a frequently used appliance and needs cleaning to remove grease and food residues. Some models have self-cleaning systems; others need manual cleaning. Before starting, check the manual and identify the enamel or coating: surfaces do not all permit the same products.

Prepare the tools and product specified by the manufacturer. Many are common household items, but compatibility with the oven matters more than having a homemade recipe.

What do you need?

• Baking soda, only if permitted by the manufacturer.
• Clean water.
• Gloves suitable for the product.
• Lightly damp cloth.
• Plastic or silicone scraper, only if permitted by the coating.
• An application container suitable for the product.
• A cleaner compatible with the oven.

Oven cleaning step by step

1. Empty the oven when switched off and cool. Remove racks, trays and stored objects according to the manual.

2. Choose the procedure. If the manufacturer permits baking soda, a water-based paste may be used on compatible surfaces; do not use it on catalytic linings or other finishes without confirmation.

3. Apply the product only to permitted areas, avoiding heating elements, fans, seals and openings. Wear the specified gloves and do not treat a colour change as a guarantee of effectiveness.

4. Respect the instructed contact time. Do not leave a product overnight unless the manufacturer or label allows it.

5. Clean racks and trays separately according to their material and permitted procedure.

6. Remove the product with a suitable cloth. If a scraper is permitted, use it gently without scratching or damaging the coating.

7. Do not add vinegar or other cleaners onto product residues without confirming compatibility. Remove each product as directed before a different treatment.

8. Finish using the specified method until no residues remain. Dry surfaces and check conditions before using the oven again.

9. Refit clean, dry racks and trays in their proper positions.
