Cleaning techniques and their uses

Every space and material needs an appropriate method. Here are professional cleaning techniques and the criteria for selecting them according to dirt, substrate and working conditions.

Ozone treatments

Ozone treatments, sometimes called ozone cleaning require specialist assessment. Ozone is an irritant and must not be applied around people or animals. It does not replace dirt removal or ventilation, and any biocidal use must meet applicable requirements. It is neither harmless nor a universal treatment.

Steam cleaning

Steam can help loosen grease and dirt on compatible materials. Its effect depends on actual temperature, contact time and equipment. Disinfection cannot be assumed for every surface.

Trained operators, burn protection and a suitable procedure are needed. Do not use steam on electrical equipment or sensitive finishes unless expressly permitted.

Two-bucket cleaning

In two-bucket cleaning clean solution and rinse water are separated to reduce dirt being spread again. Change them when needed and keep equipment clean.

It is one possible system within a cleaning plan. Sites with specific requirements must follow their agreed protocols for methods, products and checks.

Pressure washing

Pressure washing can be useful on floors and other robust substrates. Pressure, temperature and any added product must suit the material. Control spray, nearby electrical hazards and wastewater.

Carpet cleaning

The work involved in carpet cleaning starts with suitable vacuuming and stain identification. A compatible treatment is then selected; extraction is an option for certain fibres and constructions, with controlled drying.

A professional should assess fibre type, colourfastness and backing to avoid discolouration, shrinkage or retained moisture.

High-level cleaning

External window and façade cleaning requires a risk assessment and appropriate access and protective equipment. Personnel need suitable training for work at height.

Cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation

These are different processes. Cleaning removes dirt; disinfection uses a procedure appropriate to its intended purpose; sterilisation requires specific controlled processes. Choose authorised products and follow site instructions, without promising permanent total disinfection.

Microfibre

The microfibre is made from very fine fibres, commonly polyester and polyamide. Properties vary with composition and weave; it can help collect dust and moisture.

Microfibre cloths are useful for many tasks, but should be separated by area, changed when dirty and washed as instructed. They do not guarantee disinfection on their own.
