What does professional window cleaning involve?

Clean windows support natural light and good presentation. The service must also consider frames, access and the characteristics of each window.

Achieving an even finish can be time-consuming, especially on large or hard-to-reach surfaces. Here is how to plan professional window cleaning with compatible tools and safe organisation.

• Agree whether the service includes frames, profiles, handles, tracks and shutters as well as glass. A spot clean has a different scope from a full service.

• Protect or remove items obstructing access where agreed. Remove dust from frames and tracks with suitable tools without forcing mechanisms.

• Clean frames using a product compatible with the material and coating. Do not assume ammonia or vinegar suit every aluminium, PVC or wood finish. Rinse and dry as instructed.

• Clean shutters according to material and access. Remove dust first and apply a compatible treatment. Do not dismantle them or access the exterior without competence and safe equipment.

• Apply a compatible cleaner using a suitable applicator and remove it with a clean squeegee. Work systematically, controlling edges and any runoff.

• Finish edges with a lint-free cloth and check the result. Avoid dry rubbing over particles that could scratch.

Safety in window cleaning

Glass façades and external work may require poles, platforms or other specialist access. Assess risks and select the necessary protection, includingPPE, with training and procedures suited to the task. The same system is not appropriate for every building.
