How to clean floors
Published on 11/05/2018
Among routine duties, floor cleaning has a visible effect on appearance and usability. The method must suit the material and leave the surface safe, without inappropriate moisture or residue.
Identify the flooring, surface treatment and manufacturer guidance. A product suitable for one material may damage another.
Floor cleaning considerations
This guide summarises care for common materials, subject to the instructions for each floor.
-
In car parks, yards or industrial premises, remove loose dirt first and assess a compatible scrubber dryer. Select degreaser and dosing for the substrate; chlorinated products are not a general requirement.
-
For natural stone and other delicate finishes, products with neutral pH are often recommended, provided they suit the stone and existing treatment.
-
In large areas, suitable mops or vacuum equipment can remove dust efficiently. Choose the system according to obstacles, occupancy and dispersion risks.
-
Cork needs a method compatible with its seal and joints. Avoid soaking it and only use wax if recommended by the manufacturer.
-
For vinyl, remove particles and clean with a compatible product at the specified temperature and dose. Avoid excess water at joints and abrasive materials.
-
Wood needs a mop or attachment that will not scratch. Where damp cleaning is permitted, use minimal water and a recommended product. Do not add vinegar or other homemade treatments without checking compatibility.
-
For carpets, adjust vacuuming to use and fibre type. Arrange stain treatment and deep cleaning when their condition requires it.
-
Compatible washable floors may be cleaned using the two-bucket technique, which helps keep clean and dirty water separate. Disinfection, where needed, depends on the product, method and contact time.
