How to approach cleaning granite monuments

Granite is a durable stone found in sculptures, fountains, plaques and ornamental features in parks and gardens. Its lifespan depends on condition, finishes and care; it is not immune to every treatment.

Outdoor surfaces can accumulate dirt, stains and mineral deposits. Frequency and procedure should be assessed according to the object, surroundings and any heritage value. Work on a monument requires the owner’s permission and, where appropriate, specialist conservation assessment. Ask ALFHAM about surface cleaning scope without assuming restoration work.

Materials to consider for cleaning:

  • Mild, pH-neutral soap compatible with the stone.
  • A suitable container for applying the product according to its label.
  • A compatible non-metallic cleaning brush.
  • Soft-bristled brush.
  • Clean water.
  • Attached vegetation or roots should be assessed before removal to avoid damage.

General monument cleaning

First review the material, joints and condition. If the approved procedure includes wetting, control water quantities and avoid pooling in cracks or sensitive elements.

Apply only a compatible product at the specified dilution and work gently with a soft brush. Direction and method should suit the object to avoid runs, abrasion or marks. A discreet test helps assess the material’s response.

Rinse with clean water where the procedure requires and check that no product residues remain.

Allow drying according to the object’s conditions and review persistent stains or deposits. Do not intensify treatment without first assessing compatibility.

Treatment of specific stains

Dirt and bird droppings: gentle cleaning with water and a compatible product may help remove residues. Engravings and embedded deposits need particular care. Avoid hard brushes or tools that could scratch stone.

Organic stains: identify the source and surface condition before selecting treatment. Do not improvise mixtures of ammonia, peroxides or other chemicals, especially on monuments or delicate finishes. Consult a conservation professional where appropriate.

Mineral deposits: use a product compatible with the stone and finish, following its label and testing where necessary. Acids and abrasives can alter certain surfaces. Limescale removal should not be guaranteed without assessment.

Oil or grease stains: assess the residue type and stone porosity. Do not apply homemade pastes or solvents without checking their effect; unsuitable treatment can spread the stain or alter the finish.

Prior assessment and suitable care help preserve the object, without guaranteeing removal of every mark. If you need a cleaning service for granite surfaces in buildings, parks or gardens in Barcelona, describe the object’s characteristics and condition. We will define the scope that can be assessed and work requiring specialists.
