Opening the refrigerator to an unpleasant smell is frustrating. The cause may be spoiled food, a spill or an area needing cleaning. Before adding fragrances or absorbers, identify the source and inspect the interior. Here are ways to clean it and help prevent odours returning.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

1. Clean the refrigerator thoroughly<\/p>\n

Check food and discard spoiled items. Keep perishables properly chilled elsewhere while cleaning. Follow the manual for disconnecting the appliance where appropriate and removing shelves or drawers. Clean accessible surfaces, beneath drawers and the door seal. Avoid sudden temperature changes in glass parts and dry before reassembly.<\/p>\n

<\/a> 2. Choose a suitable product<\/p>\n

Use a cleaner compatible with the refrigerator interior, following the manual and label. Being natural does not guarantee compatibility or disinfection. If the manufacturer permits diluted baking soda or vinegar, use as directed and do not mix with other products. Remove residues and dry thoroughly.<\/p>\n

3. Use odour absorbers thoughtfully<\/p>\n

After removing the cause and cleaning, a container of baking soda or a suitable refrigerator odour absorber may help with residual smells. Keep it separate from food and replace as directed. Coffee, vanilla or other fragrances can mask smells but do not replace cleaning or make spoiled food safe.<\/p>\n

Once the refrigerator is clean:<\/p>\n

4. Keep food organised and visible<\/p>\n

Arrange food so you remember what is there and what should be used first. Respect compartments and each product’s storage instructions; not every food belongs on the same shelf.<\/p>\n

5. Use airtight containers<\/p>\n

Store leftovers in clean, suitable, well-sealed containers. This helps separate odours and prevent spills but does not replace correct refrigeration or food storage limits.<\/p>\n

6. Label and date leftovers<\/p>\n

Note the contents and date so you do not need to open every container or rely on memory. Check food regularly and follow storage guidance; a label helps organisation but does not by itself guarantee food remains safe.<\/p>\n
